What to Wear to a Job Interview? – Villa Group Recruiting

What to Wear to a Job Interview?

What to Wear to a Job Interview

The clothes you wear to a job interview are as crucial as the way you speak, and the attitude you take. On the whole it is recommended that you opt for formal attire for job interviews, but you should keep in mind the “personality” of the job that you are applying for. If you ensure that you reflect the tone and nature of the field you want to enter, then you’ll have more of a chance of catching the eye prospective employers.

What to wear to a job interview for Men

It is much easier for men to find the correct interview attire; a suit, dress shirt and tie will be entirely appropriate for most professional and high profile interviews. You should keep in mind, however, that what you wear still says a lot about you! Your briefcase, or lack thereof, your tie- even the color of your socks (and their visibility) could say more than you ever imagined. Consider the difference between an interview for a position at Google, and an interview for a job in a law firm. The representatives of Google are more likely to appreciate that wacky tie, and the law firm partners won’t.

What to wear to a job interview for Women

Women have it a little more tough on the dress front; a suit will do as well for women as men in formal interviews, but informal interviews prove more challenging. A general rule is to go for a more relaxed style of dress, but keep it professional. If you wouldn’t be happy to wear it to casual Fridays in the office, then it’s not a great candidate for your interview.

Compensate your Personality with Color

Everyone should consider the more esoteric aspects of their dress, too. Are you already quite loud and confident? Then perhaps you should avoid bright block colors like red to avoid appearing really over the top? Likewise, if you’re shy you could benefit from avoiding pastels and natural colors that will blend into the background in favor of more assertive colors. Use the color of your attire to compensate for your weaknesses, while still wearing clothes to your job interview that you feel comfortable in.

If you are able to, buying a new outfit for job interviews can give you a much needed confidence boost. If you cannot afford to do this, why not borrow clothes from a friend? The main thing is that you feel and look your best. This will go a long way towards ensuring that you perform as well as possible.

Last, but definitely not least, make sure whatever you are wearing to your job interview fits you well; overly loose clothing will appear untidy and poorly considered. If your clothes are too tight then it will seem like you did not plan ahead in time to get appropriate clothing. Plus, it is important that you are comfortable so that you can give your interviewer your undivided attention.
